Pixar has done it again...thirteen straight times, in fact. Their latest, “Brave,” hit #1—just like every previous Pixar release in wide release—and did it nailing an absolute bulls-eye worth $66.7 million. And opening in just 10 territories overseas—17% of the market—Pixar’s latest hit $13.5 million.

The two other new releases weren’t quite on target, as Fox’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and Focus Features’ “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” finished third and tenth respectively grossing $16.5 million and $3.8 million. Not only were these films a mouthful to say, but the mash-up nature of each film left a distinctly bad taste in the average movie-goers mouth.  

Meanwhile “Brave” is now on target to become one of the top five grossing flicks of the summer, and continues one of Hollywood’s hottest streaks at thirteen and counting. Also burning up the box office are female heroines, as “Twilight,” “Hunger Games” and this summer’s “Snow White” have proven, multiplexes, once dominated by the whims of thirteen-year-old boys, are finally moving towards equal billing, and it’s paying off handsomely...or beautifully, as the case may be.

Amazingly, “Brave” is Pixar’s first toon to feature a female lead, although Disney has been doing it since its inception, churning out princess after princess, and with each new addition, fortifying the walls of the magic kingdom, turning it into the Mecca it is today.

Their latest is the first redhead since Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” and is fiercely anti-princess. However, that won’t stop The Mouse House from selling millions of “Brave” Barbies and making a mint in merchandising—something Disney does better than anyone in the biz.

After a two week reign on top, DreamWorks Animation’s three-ring circus, “Madagascar 3,” was relegated to the side stage, finishing second with $20.2 million. Dropping only -41% is mighty impressive indeed, and will insure the Afro-Circus goes one for some time to come.

What’s really impressive about “Madagascar 3’s” hold though, is the fact that it did so in the face of its biggest competition. Ticket sales for the Zoo Crew now total $157 million domestic and $208 million overseas for an early worldwide total of $365 million.

Lucky for current president Barack Obama, the axe fell this weekend on the mash-up genre of historical horror, otherwise he might have been part of a sequel to “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” which we know now will never happen. Too bad, “Barack Obama: Republican Troll Hunter” might have been the mash-up everyone was waiting for.   

As it stands, Fox’s $70 million risk won’t pay off as the R-rated oddity will go down as a major disappointment for the studio, and likely suck the life out of author Seth Grahame-Smith’s other book that was/is in line for adaptation, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.”

Overseas, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” didn’t fare much better grossing just $8 million in its debut. Opening in 17 markets, it sucked best in director Timur Bekmambetov’s part of the world, Russia, where it totaled $3.8 million.

In fourth place, “Prometheus” became the eleventh film of the year to join the $100 million club—and Ridley Scott’s sixth film to do so—as Fox’s sci-fi hit landed another $9 million in its third weekend of release. Total domestic haul is now $108 million, while the worldwide payload is now $261.4 million. C’mon Ridley, time to pop out a sequel already!!!

“Snow White and the Huntsman” continued to hold up well in the face of competition as Universal’s hit hunted down $8 million in fifth place and has now horded $137 million in four weeks. Internationally, the film found $22.6 million this weekend and has shot past the domestic total with $160.4 million. Worldwide total is now nearing an impressive $300 million.

Last weekend’s disappointments, “Rock of Ages” and Adam Sandler’s “That’s My Boy,” each dropped less than 50% in their second tours, which is the first good news for both of these films.  “Rock” fell -45% grossing $8 million, while “Boy” dropped -41% finding $7.9 million.

Earth’s mightiest box office heroes, “The Avengers,” continued to impress, easing off just -20% and punching up an additional $7 million. Domestic total is now a marvelous $598 million and just days away from becoming just the third film to reach $600 million stateside. Globally, 2012’s biggest hit—and third highest grossing of all-time—has now reached $1.436 billion.  

Focus Features’ “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” discovered the hard way that Facebook friends aren’t real friends, as the R-rated apocalyptic rom-com found few of them grossing a pitiful $3.8 million in its debut.

For Steve Carell it marks his lowest headlining opening for a film in wide release, and honestly, probably could have used a little Bruce Willis, a couple space shuttles, a warehouse full of dynamite, and Michael Bay at the control panel. Those are the ingredients for a summer blockbuster featuring an asteroid. Der.

It’s not exactly Armageddon—or the end of the world for that matter—for those involved though, as the film likely didn’t cost much, and first-time director Lorene Scafaria will lick her wounds and get back to writing charming screenplays with happier, more popcorn-friendly endings, like “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist.”

“Seeking a Friend” probably would have made a sensational short film, but with a title that long, I guess those involved thought it deserved a length that lived up to its title. A rule of thumb to follow in Hollywood: never release a movie with a title that doesn’t fit on a traditional movie marquee. See: “The Englishman Who Went up a Mountain and Came Down a Hill” and “Don’t be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.”

Focus Features may be wishing it waited to release “Seeking a Friend” until fall, but it’s certainly not questioning the decision to drop “Moonrise Kingdom” in the middle of the summer swelter. Wes Anderson’s latest tallied another $3.4 million in its widest release of 395 theatres and finished in eleventh place. Total is now $11.6 million and on the verge of surpassing Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” which ended its journey with $11.9 million total.

In exclusive release, Woody Allen’s latest, “To Rome with Love,” fiddled triumphantly scoring $379,371 in five theatres—or $75,874 per. In comparison however, “Midnight in Paris” averaged nearly $100,000 per its opening weekend as it went on to be one of last summer’s biggest surprises, earning a career-best $56 million for The Woodman.

Based on reviews, Rome is no Paris, as “Paris” had a scorching 93% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, while “Rome” is burning much less brightly with 54%.  Still, it’s a superb start for distributor Sony Classics, and will likely play decently throughout the summer, just with a bit less gusto—about $45 million or so—than his last.

Next weekend, two comedies, a drama, and banana hammocks galore will expose themselves theatres. “Magic Mike” is getting most of the press—for all the wrong reasons—as director Steven Soderberg and one-time-stripper Channing Tatum team up for what is basically “Thunder From Down Under: The Movie.” A dramedy about male strippers?!?  I wish this would turn out to be the defacto date movie of the summer, but that’s not gonna happen. Don’t be surprised if this goes a bit limp with $14 million on 2,900+ stages. 

The real, "big" showdown will be for runner-up—as “Brave” will easily be the top banana again next weekend—as a perverted Teddy bear and Tyler Perry square off as “Ted” goes up against “Madea’s Witness Protection.”  

Seth MacFarlane brings his potty humor to the next level (aka R-rated) as he jumps from the small screen (aka “Family Guy”) to the bigs, as he makes his directorial debut with Universal’s “Ted” and voices the titled character. With Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as the non-CGI co-stars, expect upwards of $30 million in 3,000+ theatres.

Don’t count out Madea though, as Perry’s signature franchise topped $40 million with “Madea Goes to Jail” in 2009 and “Madea’s Family Reunion” hit $30 million in 2006.  However, his last fat-suit film, 2011’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” trailed off with $25 million. Still, when Tyler Perry whips out his latest Madea joint, he may just surprise “Ted” with its girth, especially if the hordes of Madea fans show up in full-force. Tyler Perry’s phat haul: $27 million at 2,000+ sites.

Last and certainly least is Disney’s drama “People Like Us” starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.  It’s very doubtful people will “like” this, or even knows what this is when they walk up to the ticket booth. Have mercy on the little drama that attempts to debut during the big, bad blockbuster season: $6 million.
