Summer came to a screeching halt at the box office many weeks ago, but all of Hollywood looks like it’s taking a vacation this weekend with just two new films heading into theaters—CBS Films’ “The Words” and Summit’s “The Cold Light of Day,”—neither of which is expected to top $10 million.

With football-frenzy in full tilt action this weekend, expect last week’s chill pill champ, “The Possession,” to run over the competition yet again, with an estimated $8.5 million. Yes, #1, with just $8.5 million. That will give you an idea of where we’re headed for this first weekend in September: the very bottom of the box office barrel.  Not surprisingly, this is typically one of the worst weekends for overall grosses each year, and not even the hunkiness of Bradley Cooper or Henry “Superman” Cavill can change that.

In 2,801 venues, “The Words,” which has been a passion project for Cooper for some time, carries a miniscule budget of just $6 million. So, even though it won’t score big time this weekend, a bow of $7 million would make the romantic drama, which CBS Films bought at the Toronto International Film Festival last year for $2 million, a financial winner.  And, if enough women-folk flock to it, like they did Cooper’s last headlining outing, “Limitless,” this could even snag the top spot.

Catching a snag has been the filmic legacy of Summit’s “The Cold Light of Day,” which has jumped release dates countless times, and up until last weekend, was only slated for a limited release, despite co-starring Bruce Willis and featuring next summer’s Man of Steel, Cavill. Now set to open in moderate wide release in 1,511 theaters don’t expect much more than $3.5 million, as Summit is dumping the action/thriller off faster than you can say: “Hey, there’s a new Bruce Willis movie at Redbox. $1.20! Sold!”

There’s gotta be a hero that can save the day, though, right? Well, are you jonesin’ for some Indy? Paramount and Lucasfilm are releasing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” on 267 IMAX screens this weekend as a tip of the fedora hat to fans before it whips up the Blu-ray charts as the box set, “Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures,” hits shelves September 18.  Could wind up with upwards of $2-$2.5 million this weekend.
